L.A County Sheriff Helmet

Purchased from a military surplus dealer several years ago, this riot style helmet sits on a bookshelf in my office. In fact, it’s sat for so long, it needed a little buffing before the picture was taken. It appears to be an old motorcycle helmet, consistent with the ones worn on CHiPs, but modified for riot and/or crowd control. Since the day I got it, the padding inside has been extremely sticky. Maybe it’s old age, maybe it’s something grosser. I just handle it by the sides. One day I may repaint it and get some CHiPs autographs on it. Until then, it looks pretty cool on my shelf. Stamped on the back is “LAWS 236812.” It might be an individual officer identifier but it’s more likely an inventory control number.
